General information: This exciting competition will help facilitate the emergence of students into the Information Technology Field. Students will be interviewed by Patriots and BDPA staff members. Participants will receive several months of introductory and advanced computer technology training in preparation for the competition.
Program: Students will learn to develop solutions to realistic business and industry problems using a web technology programming language such as the Microsoft, NET or JAVA. Additionally, students will learn to utilize HTML, JavaScript, SQL, relational database management systems and a variety of other internet and computer-related technology. Students will also gain essential skills such as presentation delivery, communication, and teamwork.
Bowie State University hosted the Regional Competition before they traveled to the National Competition in Atlanta, GA. Teams from Baltimore, Philadelphia, North Carolina and Virginia participated in the regional event. In the last three years, the Washington, DC students placed in the top 3 at the National Competition. Our students have won a total of $25,000 in scholarships. This year we will continue to prepare our students to win more scholarships.
Students will meet on the 3rd Saturday of each month to have preliminary classes from September to February. To accomplish the goal for the competition, the team will need to meet from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; March to August. During July and August, classes will be held on Sundays as needed. This is a rigorous program and students must have the ability to balance HSCC with regular school work. Students are responsible for weekly homework assignments.
Business and government support: Tech Master, Frannie Mae and Freddie Mac are sponsors that support the students to attend the conference.
