BIO-MEDICAL COMPETITION

Bio-Medical Competition:  January 27, 2010

Awards Dinner: Radisson Hotel, Largo, MD

General information: Our mission is to improve the community by presenting programs that educate, inform, enlighten community residents on a number of issues including technology, college preparation and health related matters.  In order to bring attention to medical conditions, like heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, HIV/Aids, stroke, obesity, glaucoma, lupus and cancer, that disproportionately affect the African American community, we plan to recruit high schools students in Prince George’s County, Maryland to participate in a Bio-Medical competition.

Program: Students from ten (10) schools will do an exhaustive study of a disease, including its indications, treatments and effects.  After the students have researched the disease of their choice, they will submit an abstract, write a research paper of at least 5 pages and prepare a brochure, web page and a display regarding what they have learned. This project, thus, builds research and business skills as well as technology skills.

Schools:  The 2009-2010 competition will be among the Prince George’s High School – so get a team together.

Awards Program Dinner: When the students have completed their projects, their will give an oral presentation at the dinner  in front of a panel of medical professionals judges, community residents, parents, elective  officials, school boards members and teachers. The judges will pick the winner team base on their project.

Prizes: Each member of the winning team of the Patriots Bio-Medical Competition will receive a $250 American Express credit card.

Business and government support:  Several companies have been recruited to serve as instructors, mentors and technical advisors.  This project will significantly impact the community by bringing attention to the environment in their community and help students to look at careers in the medical field.  New business participants are welcome
