General information:  This will be the 5th year that the Patriots have hosted the DOE Maryland Regional Middle School Science Bowl.  The National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that test students’ knowledge in all areas of science.  Teams consist of four students and an alternate.  The Science Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, March 13, 2009 from 8am to 4pm at Ernest Just Middle School, Mitchellville, MD.  In preparation for this event, a Coach Workshop will be held on Saturday, January 16 from 10am to 12noon for the “solar car” at Kenmoor Middle School, Landover, MD.

For the second year, the winning team was from Takoma Park Middle School of Takoma Park, MD.  First place winners get a chance to go to the Nationals and compete with students from all over the country.

Program:   There are two phases of the Middle School Science Bowl – an academic math and science competition where students are quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy and a solar car competition.  The solar car competition challenges students to design, build, and race model cars.

Teams:  Any current public, private or home school students (in grades 6th to 8th, ages 10 to 14) may form a team and participate. A limit of 16 teams will compete in the event. To register your team, go to: http://nationalsciencebowl.energy.gov.

Business and government support:  As the official Science Bowl Sponsor, Lockheed Martin has provided breakfast and lunch as well as a guest speaker.   Volunteers from Raytheon, organizations and colleges came out and participated as judges, moderators, timekeepers, and scorekeepers.  The University of Maryland Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers Chapter joined in the sponsorship and help to make this Science Bowl an overwhelming success.

Fee: $40

Information and registration:  Call Patriots at 301-925-9350.
